Court-Appointed Counsel Compensation

NACDL joined defender organizations in supporting increasing compensation for court-appointed counsel.

In 2024, HB 102, which would raise the limitation of fees that court-appointed counsel can receive for representation on various offenses in district and circuit courts, has been signed by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. This marks the first increase for Virginia’s court-appointed attorneys in 20 years. The new court-appointed compensation will take effect on January 1, 2025.
